The Butcher

Heroic Overview

The Butcher is the second boss in the Highmaul raid instance. There are a lot of interesting mechanics to this encounter and how we plan to overcome these challenges I will detail in our strategy section below but for now lets go over the basics of this fight. This is a one stage encounter that takes place in the Underbelly of Highmaul. This is a single target fight designed around managing the boss's main ability Cleave. Cleave does a massive amount of Physical damage at the largest group of players within his melee range. Each time a player is hit they suffer a stacking debuff called Gushing Wounds. If a player reaches 5 stacks of Gushing Wounds they will instantly die. In order to defeat this encounter we will need to be able to effectively manage Gushing Wounds. Also I would like to mention this boss has a fairly unforgiving enrage timer so this encounter is also a raid dps check. Enough said, lets begin this review by taking a looking at Butcher's abilities.

  • Heavy Handed is an ability where the Butcher's standard auto attacks trigger a second attack on the next closest target within 5-yards of his current target. If no target is found, he will strike the primary target again. This will require tanks to be in close proximity to one another at all times.
  • The Cleaver is an attack the Butcher uses against his current target. It deals a moderate amount of Physical damage and applies a stacking bleed effect. This attack will not apply the bleed effect if avoided.
  • The Tenderizer is an attack the Butcher uses against his current target. It deals a significant amount of Physical damage and applies a stacking debuff that increases the damage taken by subsequent attacks from Tenderizer by 50%. This attack cannot be avoided and will require a tank switch.
  • Meat Hook is an ability the Butcher uses to pull in his target if they happen to move out of his melee range. This ability is designed to prevent kiting.
  • Cleave is the Butcher's main ability. He will target the largest group of players in melee range and strike them for a massive amount of Physical damage. The damage is split evenly amongst all players in the group. Victims of Cleave receive a stacking DoT called Gushing Wounds.
  • Gushing Wounds causes the victim to bleed profusely for a moderate amount of Physical damage over 15 seconds. If the victim reaches 5 stacks of Gushing Wounds they will instantly perish.
  • Bounding Cleave is an ability the Butcher uses upon reaching 100 Energy. He starts by knocking everyone backwards through the air. Shortly after he targets the largest group of players at range, charges at them and casts Cleave.
  • Frenzy is an ability the Butcher uses upon reaching 30% health. While Frenzied the Butcher deals 10% more damage and attacks 30% faster.

Basically this is a Patchwerks style encounter, tanks are responsible for performing switches every 2-3 stacks of Tenderizer, have proximity awareness for Heavy Handed, and use avoidance abilities for The Cleaver. The rest of the raid will need to be divided up into smaller sub-groups. These sub-groups will need to be able to manage Cleave effectively so that nobody dies from taking 5 stacks of Gushing Wounds.

Mythic Changes

Aside from dealing more damage and having more health the Butcher encounter on Mythic difficulty gains one new mechanic. This new mechanic comes to us in the form of adds that spawn throughout the fight. These adds called Night-Twisted Cadavers have no health and cannot be attacked. When they spawn all they do is slowly walk towards the boss and if they come into contact with either the boss or another player they explode. Night-Twisted Cadavers have the following abilities.

  • Paleobomb is an ability that Night-Twisted Cadavers cast when they come into contact with a player or the boss. This ability deals a significant amount of Physical damage to all enemies within 8-yards.
  • Pale Vitriol is purple zone that Night-Twisted Cadavers leave behind after they explode. These zones persist for the entire duration of the encount. Anyone who stands in them suffers a large amount of Shadow damage every second, has their movement speed reduced by 30% and takes 100% more damage from the Butchers Cleave ability.

Going Ham!

We will use Heroism/Time Warp at 30% when the Butcher goes into Frenzy.

General Positioning

We will be tanking the boss on the water side of the Underbelly. We will position the boss in a two step process. The first step or initial positioning we will move the boss to the sand bank just outside the main room (refer to the images). The Cleave groups will be positioned to the left, and right sides of the boss respectively, same as heroic. The Bounding Cleave group will move further out to the second sand bank. During this initial positioning Mages and hunters will be responsible for triggering the Night-Twisted Cadavers as they spawn.

Initial Positions

When the first Bounding Cleave is cast we want him to charge towards the Range group in the back. The tanks will pick up the boss and proceed to tank him there for the remainder of the fight. The Cleave groups will now be positioned to the left, and back sides of the boss respectively leaving the right side for Night-Twisted Cadavers.

Final Positions
  • We're going to move the boss in two steps. The first step or initial position move the boss to the first sand bank just outside the main room.
  • On the first Bounding Cleave he is going to charge towards the Bounding Cleave group on the second sand bank. Tanks need to quickly move to that location, pick up the boss and proceed to tank him there for the remainder of the fight.
  • Tanks will need to always be within 5 yards from one another for Heavy Handed.
  • Tanks will need to perform a switch after every two stacks of The Tenderizer.
  • At every opportunity tanks should use avoidance abilities in attempt to avoid The Cleaver.
  • Tanks need to be mindful of possible periods of massive damage as a result of having both The Cleaver and Tenderizer debuffs. Please react intelligently using personal damage mitigation abilities or poll the raid for external cooldowns.
  • Make sure to watch the tanks heath at all times, there will be periods of time where the tanks will take massive damage as a result of having both The Cleaver and Tenderizer debuffs.
  • Be mindful groups that are struck by Cleave suffer a large amount of Physical damage.
  • Be aware of the raid-wide damage that occurs when Butcher begins his Bounding Cleave sequence.
  • If you are assigned to a Cleave group make sure that you are tightly stacked up.
  • Under no circumstances should players be standing inside Pale Vitriol. Especially tanks and Cleave groups, standing inside a Pale Vitriol will prove to be fatal.
  • As alway do not stand in front of the boss, and do not be within 5-yards of the tanks.
  • Dps Butcher.
  • If you are responsible for triggering the Night-Twisted Cadavers make sure to use a damage reduction or mitigation ability.
  • Under no circumstances should players be standing inside Pale Vitriol. Especially tanks and Cleave groups, standing inside a Pale Vitriol will prove to be fatal.
  • As alway do not stand in front of the boss, and do not be within 5-yards of the tanks.
