Oregorger

Heroic Overview

Oregorger is the second boss in the Blackrock Foundry raid instance. There are a lot of interesting mechanics to this encounter and how we plan to overcome these challenges I will detail in our strategy section below but for now lets go over the basics of this fight. This is a cyclical two phase encounter that takes place in the Blackrock Depository. The first phase lasts as long as Oregorger has mana. During this phase whenever Orgorger uses an ability against the raid it costs him a portion of his mana. Once all his mana has been depleted he enters the second stage of the encounter. In the second phase he rolls around the room collecting Blackrock ore from the destroyed crates. Everytime he pickups a piece of ore it restores a little bit of his mana. When he reaches 100% mana he initiates the start of phase one again. This cycle repeats until he is dead. Lets begin this overview with a look at Oregorger's abilities.

Satiated Slaughter

  • Acid Torrent is an ability that Oregorger uses against a Range target. This ability sprays a cone of acid that deals a larger amount of Physical damage to everyone it hits. Now interestingly the amount of damage it does can reduced by the use of damage reduction effects on the first player it hits. Essentially this player acts as a filter by the use of damage reduction abilities reduces the amount of damage splashed onto other players. The player that filters the damage from Acid Torrent receives a stacking debuff that increases damage taken by future Acid Torrents for 20 seconds. This ability requires a tank switch.
  • Retched Blackrock is an ability that Oregorger uses that causes him to regurgitate Blackrock Ore at the location of a random Range raid member leaving a pool of acid that inflicts a moderate amount of Nature to anyone who stands in it.
  • Explosive Shard is an ability Oregorger uses where he hurls a shard at the location of a random melee player. On impact the shard knocks any nearby players backwards then 3 second after it explodes dealing a moderate amount of Fire damage to everyone within 3-yards of it, also stunning them for short period of time.
  • Blackrock Barrage is an ability Oregorger uses during the first stage only that deals a large amount of raid-wide Physical damage and costumes mana every time it's successfully cast. This ability is interruptible and the raid will want to interrupt it because it not only reduces the amount of damage everyone takes but also keeps Oregorger in the first phase longer.
  • Acid Maw is an ability where Oregorger places a stacking Nature damage DoT on his current tank, this ability will require a tank switch.

Feeding Frenzy

  • Rolling Fury is an ability Oregorger uses that causes him to roll around on the floor, dealing a large amount of Physical damage to any players he collides with knocking them down.
  • Earthshaking Collision deals a small amount of raid-wide Nature damage each time he ends a roll.
  • Hunger Drive is a stacking buff Oregorger receives the longer he remains in his Feeding Frenzy phase that increases the damage inflicted from Earthshaking Collision by 5% per stack.

Mythic Changes

On Mythic difficulty Oregorger has more health and deals more damage. He also gains one new ability called Unstable Slag which he will use only during the Feeding Frenzy stage. In regards to the rest of the encounter everything else mechanically is identical to the Heroic version of this fight. Before I go over the adjustments to our strategy lets take a detailed look at the changes.

During Feeding Frenzy whenever Oregorger collides against a wall he creates an Unstable Slag residue at the location of the collision. These residue persist for the entire duration of the encounter unless they are triggered causing an Unstable Slag Explosion. Unstable Slag explodes under one of two conditions either when Oregorger collides into it or if a wave of Fire hits it as a result of another Unstable Slag explosion. When an Unstable Slag explodes it sends waves of Fire in all directions from the epicenter. These waves travel the length of each corridor that they are connected to and disappear when they hit a wall. Anyone who is by these waves will suffer a moderate amount of Fire damage. Often times one denotation will trigger other explosions creating a domino effect so expect things to get hawt.

In the Satiated Slaughter stage Blackrock Barrage now needs to be interrupted 5 times up from 3 in Heroic.

Going Ham!

We will use Heroism/Time Warp at the start of the encounter so we can take advantage of players potions and cooldowns.

General Positioning

Raid PositioningWe will position Oregorger at the end of a trench at a 90 degree angle to the Range. Range will be located on the opposite end while Melee will be positioned right behind the boss. The Range will be divided up into two groups, with each group standing against the left and right walls respectively. The off-tank will need to position himself/herself adjacent to the main tank in between Oregorger and the Range.

Satiated Slaughter

Just before Acid Torrent is cast the filter tank or more specifically the tank that is standing in front of the Range needs to make sure that he/she is the closest player to the boss. The filter tank also needs to make sure that he/she has a damage reduction effect on himself/herself everytime Oregorger casts Acid Torrent. Recall that whenever Oregorger casts Acid Torrent he will pivot towards the Range and spew acid at them. The baseline damage of this ability is very high however, the damage can be reduced through the use of damage reduction effects on the first player that it hits. Tanks will need to switch positions every Acid Torrent as a result of the debuff placed on the filter tank and the Acid Maw debuff Oregorger places on his current target.

When the acidic vomit pools from Retched Blackrock land on Range whichever group is affected will need to move forward. We're essentially create two lanes for dropping pools to reduce the overall movement required by the raid. In the case where one group is significantly closer to the boss then the other the leading group needs to go back and stand on top of the trailing group.

  • Position Oregorger at a 90 degree angle to the Range group(s).

  • The tank who is filtering the Acid Torrent will suffer a large amount of Physical damage and will require direct heals.
  • Be mindful that Range will experience moderate to high amounts of Physical damage during Acid Torrent.
  • Move out of Retched Blackrock (the vomit pools he lobs at the Range).
  • Dps Oregorger.
  • Use personal damage reduction or mitigation abilities during Acid Torrent.
  • Interrupt Blackrock Barrage. This will help reduce the overall damage dealt to the raid and it will lower the rate in which he uses mana. The longer he keeps his mana the longer he is in the Satiated Slaughter phase and that is exactly what we want.
  • Range Dps move out of Retched Blackrock (the vomit pools he lobs at the Range).
  • Melee Dps move out of Explosive Shards.

General Positioning

During the Feeding Frenzy phase we will be stacking up as a raid taking a specific path for destroying crates.

Feeding Frenzy

The path Oregorger takes during the second phase is influenced by whether or not there is ore available for him to pick up. We will use this pathing behavior to our advantage by killing crates in a specific pattern as illustrated. This will allow us to control the path he travels during this phase eliminating the randomness that occurs when everyone destroys crates at their own discretion.
