Gruul

Heroic Overview

Gruul is the first boss in the Blackrock Foundry raid instance. There are a lot of interesting mechanics to this encounter and how we plan to overcome these challenges I will detail in our strategy section below but for now lets go over the basics of this fight. This is a one stage encounter that takes place in Gruul's Lair. This is a fairly straight forward fight that consists of no adds with a lot of mechanics revolving around moment and proper positioning. Like always having strong raid awareness pays high dividends and will be a measure of how quickly we will be able to defeat this boss. Lets start off this overview by looking at Gruuls abilities.

  • Inferno Slice is an ability that Gruul casts upon reaching 100 Rage. This ability does a moderate amount of Physical damage to his current target and applies a 30 second debuff that increases damage taken by successive Inferno Strikes by 20%, this ability will require a tank switch. In addition to the direct damage, Infero Slice also inflicts a massive amount of Fire damage to all players in front of him. This damage is split evenly amongst those players who are hit and applies a 3 second Fire damage DoT.
  • Overwhelming Blows is an ability Gruul casts that deals a large amount of Physical damage to all players within 10-yards of his current target and places a 60 second stacking debuff that increases damage taken from subsequent Overwhelming Blows by 10%, this ability will require a tank switch.
  • Petrifying Slam is an ability that Gruul casts on several random raid members causing them to be knocked in a random direction. When a player is knocked back he/she will receive a stacking debuff that reduces movement speed by 20%. The stack count for this debuff will incrementally grow at a rate of one stack per second, upon reaching the 5th stack the afflicted player will become Petrified. Shortly after becoming Petrified, Gruul will roar causing the Petrification to Shatter resulting in those players dealing a large amount of Nature damage to any allies within 8-yards of them.
  • Overhead Smash is an ability that Gruul uses at a targeted location of a random raid member. This ability is a linear forward attack that is telegraphed by a series of cracks in the ground. This ability deals a large amount of Physical damage to all players who are hit by it knocking them backwards.
  • Destructive Rampage is an ability where Gruul becomes untankable and moves to the center of the room and proceeds to cast several consecutive back-to-back Overhead Smashes. This occurs every couple of minutes.
  • Cave In is an ability where Gruul causes rocks to continuously fall down from the ceiling dealing moderate amount of Physical damage to all players hit by it. Like all area of effect abilities Cave In is telegraphed and should be avoided.

Mythic Changes

Aside from having more health and dealing more damage on Mythic difficulty Gruul gains one new ability and several of his existing abilities have been slightly modified to make this version of the encounter more challenging. Unlike normal and heroic modes where positioning was fairly forgiving, on Mythic difficulty it is not. In fact the difference between defeating this encounter or failing at it comes down to one simple measurement and that is how well we are able to execute correct positioning. Before we go over the adjustments to our strategy lets review what has been specifically changed and or added to this version of the encounter.

  • Flare is an environmental ability where the furnaces along the outside of the room now shoot Fireballs across the room. These Fireballs travel in a linear path and disappear when they hit the wall on the opposite side. Anyone who hit by these Fireballs will suffer a large amount of Fire damage in addition to receiving a stacking debuff that increases all Fire damage taken by 20% per stack, this debuff duration lasts for 15 seconds.
  • Gruul now gains Rage at an increased rate, and as a result he will cast Inferno Slice more frequently.
  • If Inferno Slice doesn’t hit 4 or more players Gruul will instantly gain 50 Rage.
  • Overwhelming Blows debuff now lasts 45 seconds up from 30 seconds.
  • Petrifying Slam now hits all raid members.

Going Ham!

We will be using Heroism/Time Warp at the start of the encounter because this will be the most stationary part of the fight.

General Positioning

We will position Gruul in the center of his lair using a four point layout. Tanks will aim to keep him facing in one fixed direction 10-yards away from all players to ensure no one is accidently debuffed by Overwhelming Blows. The off-tanks will be positioned in the surrounding groups to taunt Gruul when he casts Inferno Slice, an ability that can no longer be solo soaked. We are going to do a one Infero Slice group rotation since the debuff duration is 30 seconds long and the time between Inferno Slices average about 12.332 seconds, with 3 groups a full rotation will be 36.996 seconds, enough time for the first groups debuff to fall off. Tanks will take turns tanking Gruul in accordance to how many stacks of Overwhelming Blows the currently have. The indicator we will use for tank switches on Gruul will be an Inferno Slice count of 2, 2, 3, 2. Why 3? Because there is a bit of an overlap between resetting the Overwhelming Blows on the first tank, the third tank will hold the boss for 3 inferno slices up from 2. We will use external cool downs on this tank. This will allow for the extra time for the starting tank to have dropped his overwhelming blows stacks before taunting the boss again. Remember there are 9 Inferno Slices before each Destructive Rampage phase. Destructive Rampage lasts approximately 45.402 seconds.

Gruul Smash

For approximately 30 seconds Gruul will move to the center of the room and cast Cave In. Cave In will create small areas in the room where rock debris will continuously fall down from the ceiling. These affected areas can be visually identified by projected circles on the ground. There are no special instructions required to manage this ability other than people simply need to avoid them. In addition to Cave In, Gruul will cast Overhead Smash. Remember as detailed above this is a linear frontal attack that must be also avoided as it does a large amount of Physical damage with can be lethal when combined damage from Cave In. If you are caught between a rock and a hard place (no pun intended) choose to take the Cave In damage over Overhead Smash but not both!

Petrifying Slam

If you have any experience with Gruul from Burning Crusade you will be no stranger to his Petrifying Slam ability. For those of you that never fought Gruul before or if you are simply looking for a quick refresher lets go over what to expect. Throughout the encounter Gruul will periodically slam the ground and will knock everybody back sending them flying through the air in arbitrary directions. These everyone will then receive a stacking debuff that will slow their movement speed by 20% every second until they become completely immobilized. Shortly after becoming immobilized (Petrified) Gruul will roar shattering their hardened skin causing damage to all enemies within 8-yards of them. If you haven't already inferred, this means everyone will need to immediately move to a safe location relatively away from one another before becoming Petrified. Everyone must be acutely aware of the location of all other players within your groups and reposition accordingly.

  • Tanks switch every 2 stacks of Inferno Slice up until the first Overwhelming Blow then tank switch when the Overwhelming Blows debuff falls off.
  • Make sure to alternate between groups for each Inferno Slice.
  • Move out of Overhead Smash. This ability does a large amount of Physical damage and its area of effect is telegraphed and is therefore completely avoidable.
  • Move out of the falling rocks as a result of Cave In. Remember that these affected areas are graphically identified by projected circles on the ground.
  • Be aware that tanks will take increasingly large amounts of damage as they gain additional stacks of Overwhelming Blows and Inferno Slice.
  • Be mindful that the Infero Slice group will take a large amount of Physical damage, and the leftover Fire damage DoT will require additional healing.
  • Be aware of players struck by Overhead Smash or Cave In will need immediate attention.
  • If you are afflicted with Petrify, your number one responsibility is to immediately move to a safe location in the room away from all other players before becoming Petrified.
  • Move out of Overhead Smash. This ability does a large amount of Physical damage and its area of effect is telegraphed and is therefore completely avoidable.
